The Decadent World of the Yoshiwara: Dream and Reality

The Yoshiwara pleasure quarters were the heart of a dazzling alternative culture, where courtesans were queens and men could imagine themselves princes. But what was the reality for the women that worked there? I will explore the glamour and grit as depicted in woodblock prints and Victorian era photographs.
